Gion District

Gion developed as an entertainment district serving visitors to Yasaka Shrine from the 17th century, and today preserves more traditional architecture than anywhere else in Japan outside of open-air museums. The Hanamikoji-dori street, lined with traditional ochaya teahouses (accessible only by introduction), is the most iconic street in Kyoto.

The Gion Kobu area around Hanamikoji is home to approximately 80 active geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha). Early evening (5pm-9pm) is when they move between engagements — spotting them on the narrow Shinbashi-dori or Shirakawa-dori lanes is still possible with patience, though please do not pursue or photograph them without consent. The Gion Matsuri festival in July transforms the entire district. The Nishiki Market food street is accessible from the Gion end.
